Ahni was baptized this afternoon.
Although I love this photo of her and her dad, my favorite
memory from the afternoon is a wider view: her smiling, standing there in in the sunshine on
the shore hand in hand with her father with the more than fifty others gathered
around her, all there to celebrate and support her today and in whatever she
does next.
That crowd gathered on the shore has hugely varied ties to and
understandings of the actual baptismal ordinance. But it’s always a good thing to be a part of,
this showing up for each other, if it’s a part of your tradition, and maybe, especially, if it isn’t yet.
