Day 108: Wicked

So I didn't actually take any photos of it, but the highlight of today was definitely the play we saw tonight. The Broadway tour of Wicked is in Albuquerque this week so it seemed too good to pass up. I've wanted to see this show for a few years now. It didn't disappoint.

I'm not generally a musical person, but Broadway-quality theater is a whole different story. It's always fun to watch people who are among the best in the country at what they're doing do their thing regardless of the activity. The musical part was impressive, but I loved all the elaborate Oz-inspired costumes and sets. It would be such a fun production to design all those components for. The lighting was amazing, too. It's pretty magical what they're able to do and all the different sorts of locations they can bring to life on stage. And there were flying monkeys. How can you top that?

I need to go back and read Gregory Maguire's book. I really liked it when I read it a few years ago, but I read all three in the trilogy and now I can't remember what they cut out & rearranged for the screenplay and what may have just been in one of the other two books. The screenplay was much different from the book but the witty dialogue was still there. I initially thought the OzSpeak sprinkled through the story was clever but now it just reminds me off how every single political satire sketch portrays George W. Bush.  The whole thing was a little confusifying... might even touch on disrespectation, except I know I was the only one who kept expecting the former president to jump out from backstage in some fancy green Oz getup. Oh well. Still a good show even without an appearance by former president turned Broadway munchkin.

  1. I'm so incredibly jealous. I loved the book! I really want to read the second and third too. Glad you're able to relax and enjoy yourself.
